Big Farmland Bird Count Extended to March 1 After Wet Weather Hits Participation

Organisers say the extra week will bolster a dataset used to argue for continued agri-environment funding.

Overview

  • The GWCT shifted the closing date from February 22 to March 1 to give farmers, land managers and other working conservationists more time to take part.
  • Participants are asked to spend about 30 minutes recording the species and numbers of birds in a selected area on their land.
  • Results can be submitted via the PERDIXPro Fieldbook app in the field or by using a printable count sheet from the BFBC website.
  • Guidance encourages waiting for a dry weather window and recommends counting near hedgerows where many farmland birds take cover.
  • GWCT’s Dr Roger Draycott says wider participation sharpens species trend data and strengthens the message to policymakers.
