BhopalVidisha Bypass Cave-In: MPRDC Sends Soil for Tests, Flags Early Construction Lapses

A three-member inquiry is due within a week to determine accountability.

Overview

  • MPRDC collected soil from the collapsed stretch and sent it to the Public Works Department’s central lab, citing prima facie lapses including substandard RE wall work, poor soil quality, missing stone pitching, rainwater seepage, and farmer excavation that blocked drainage.
  • A technical panel of Chief Engineer B.S. Meena and General Managers Manoj Gupta and R.S. Chandel will submit findings within seven days, with Managing Director Bharat Yadav pledging strict action if negligence is confirmed.
  • Restoration has begun with completion now targeted in about 10 days, while the site is barricaded and traffic is diverted under police supervision.
  • No injuries were reported after the section near Bilkhiria and the Kalyanpur overbridge gave way on Monday, with differing reports placing the collapse at 50 to nearly 100 metres and about 20 feet deep.
  • The bypass was built under a BOT contract by Transstroy in 2013; the agreement was terminated in 2020 for non-compliance and the firm was blacklisted for three years, and NHAI clarified the affected stretch is under MPRDC jurisdiction.
