Bhojpur Man Dies After Livestreamed Standoff With Police; Inquiry Launched

An official probe will examine whether officers acted in self-defence after the death prompted large local protests.

Overview

  • Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, 28, was shot during a two-day standoff with Shahpur police and STF and died after being taken for medical treatment on Wednesday.
  • Police say Tiwari fired at officers, that personnel returned fire in self-defence, and that a pistol, two live cartridges, a magazine and two spent casings were recovered from the scene.
  • Authorities had described Tiwari as mentally unwell and said they were trying to bring him into custody for treatment before the confrontation was escalated by gunfire.
  • Tiwari’s family and hundreds of villagers dispute the police account, say he had surrendered, and blocked the Ara-Buxar highway in protest while demanding an impartial investigation.
  • Shahabad Range officials suspended the Shahpur SHO, a sub-inspector and a constable and ordered a departmental probe; live social-media video and the post-mortem will be central to the inquiry.
