Bhairon Marg Underpass Work Resumes With Rail Nod for February 2027 Finish

A slimmer design limited to two light-vehicle lanes cleared a path under active rail lines.

Overview

  • Public Works Department officials say box pushing is complete and final construction has begun, with the minister projecting completion by February 2027.
  • Indian Railways granted in-principle approval for the revised method, and trains are expected to be diverted for only a few days to let crews work under the tracks.
  • The approved redesign cuts clearance from 5.5 metres to 3.9 metres and narrows the width to 6.25 metres, turning the link into a two-lane corridor for light motor vehicles.
  • Work stalled in 2023 when precast boxes sank after Yamuna flooding, prompting the PWD to drop a rail shutdown plan and shift from box pushing to cast-in-situ construction with soil grouting.
  • Half the link is open for limited use, but diversions and barricades are clogging Ring Road, Bhairon Marg and Sarai Kale Khan, with officials expecting relief for Pragati Maidan and the ITO corridor once the underpass opens.
