BFI Reinstates Trial-Based Boxing Selection With In-Ring Scoring After SAI Intervention

Government scrutiny over opaque assessments prompted a return to immediate, in-ring scoring.

Overview

  • The federation, which announced the reversal Tuesday, set May 13–15 trials at NIS Patiala with a five-judge panel and scores called in the ring.
  • SAI suspended the Patiala assessment camp Sunday, citing no clear evaluation matrix, no named High Performance Unit evaluators, and irregular coach empanelment, and ordered a halt till further notice.
  • The Sports Ministry issued a showcause notice Tuesday that gave the BFI seven days to reply over an ambiguous selection policy, the missing High Performance Director, gaps in coach selection panels, and missed planning timelines.
  • The BFI withdrew earlier sports-science, weight, health, and attendance scores as null and void and said selections will now rest on sparring performance recorded and scored on the spot.
  • COAS Cup medal winners remain out because SAI called the event a closed competition, and several excluded boxers are preparing to seek relief in court as trials proceed this week.
