Bezzecchi Suspended From Czech GP After Striking Marshal

The FIM Appeal Stewards upheld a suspension under Article 3.3.2.2 to protect marshals from physical aggression.

Overview

  • During Saturday's Brno MotoGP Sprint, onboard footage shows Marco Bezzecchi crash, a marshal accidentally rev the bike while lifting it, and Bezzecchi run over, switch off the engine and push and strike the marshal.
  • The FIM MotoGP Stewards cited Article 3.3.2.2 for an immediate suspension from the remainder of the Czech Grand Prix, describing the actions as prejudicial to the interests of the sport.
  • Aprilia lodged an immediate appeal that the FIM Appeal Stewards rejected, Aprilia then withdrew further challenge, and Bezzecchi issued both a public statement and a personal apology to the marshal.
  • The ban has immediate title consequences: Bezzecchi's lead was cut to 15 points after the Sprint and his absence from Sunday's race creates a clear opportunity for rivals, with team-mate Jorge Martin also carrying two long-lap penalties.
  • The stewards stressed deterrence and protection of officials, noting Bezzecchi's 2022 fine for a similar marshal incident and placing the case in a wider debate about sprint racing, rider behaviour and marshal procedures.
