Overview
- Officials reported the incident at about 9:10 pm Tuesday near Sai Dham Mandir on the Western Express Highway in Kandivali East.
- Route 289 was operating from Kandivali Station to Anita Nagar when the bus developed a technical fault, and the crew evacuated all passengers safely.
- Senior Inspector Jayawant Shinde said the driver was taking the emptied bus toward the Magathane depot when it suddenly caught fire.
- Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police and BEST reached the spot, doused the blaze by around 10:05 pm and removed the vehicle.
- Preliminary accounts point to ignition in the engine section, and traffic on the highway was slowed and briefly diverted before normalizing.
