Bermondsey Recycling Centre Fire Brought Under Control After Major Rail Disruption

Crews remained on site overnight to damp down hotspots and an official investigation has been opened into the cause.

Overview

  • A large fire at the Landmann Way recycling centre in Bermondsey was reported in the early evening and produced thick black smoke that was visible across south‑east London.
  • The London Fire Brigade mobilised about 100 firefighters, 15 engines and two 32‑metre turntable ladders to tackle the blaze from ground and aerial positions.
  • At the height of the incident a warehouse roof and large amounts of refuse were alight, a van and a car were destroyed, and one man was treated at the scene.
  • Trains through London Bridge were blocked, diverted or cancelled during Monday evening causing widespread disruption, with most services largely restored by the following morning after safety checks.
  • Fire crews have been working overnight to extinguish hotspots and investigators will examine the site once it is safe, with local authorities and rail operators assessing any damage to nearby infrastructure.
