Berlin Transit Crime Falls to 10-Year Low as BVG Plans AI Video Pilot

Stronger police patrols with expanded surveillance underpin the gains.

Overview

  • BVG said recorded offenses fell 16% in 2025, reaching the lowest level in more than a decade.
  • Serious crimes on the network totaled 4,002 in 2025, down 3% year over year, while incidents against staff dropped about 18% to 269.
  • The pattern shifted as reported sexual offenses rose to 314 even as pickpocketing and other minor crimes fell sharply.
  • BVG credits about 250 daily guards, more joint patrols with police, and AI-enabled cameras that spot hazards such as people on tracks, unattended bags, smoke, or people in distress.
  • The company is extending its Sicherheitsradar to 20 stations and will test AI video in public areas at Kottbusser Tor once data protection officials approve it, with riders there already reporting higher feelings of safety.
