Berlin Schools Pilot Hologram Lessons on Antisemitism and Tolerance

Organizers will assess the weeklong trial for potential expansion across Berlin, possibly nationwide.

Overview

  • About 400 students in grades 8 to 10 are taking part this week at five schools in the city.
  • The sessions feature Holocaust survivor Ruth Winkelmann in conversation with Klaas Heufer-Umlauf, with appearances by public figures including Bärbel Bas, Kai Wegner, Kida Khodr Ramadan and Eko Fresh.
  • Holograms are projected onto large video cubes to create a lifelike presence, followed by interactive classroom work prepared by teachers.
  • The educational concept and materials were developed with Berlin educators, including Carolin Kleinfeld and Sebastian Telschow.
  • The initiative, led by Nicolai Schwarzer and the association Nie wieder ist jetzt e. V., grew from low youth turnout at a 2023 rally and launched after overcoming technical and funding delays, with schools expected to apply for future rounds.
