Berlin S-Bahn to Deploy On-Board Cleaning and Security Teams June 1

The push seeks to rebuild rider confidence by pairing in-service cleaning with visible security.

Overview

  • S-Bahn Berlin announced Tuesday a fast-track program that sends mobile cleaning and security teams through trains starting June 1.
  • Teams will ride from about 5 a.m. to wipe up minor messes on board and call in deeper cleaning when needed, with DB Sicherheit staff accompanying them.
  • Managers aim to reach roughly two-thirds of trains in service and lift daily cleanings by about 12 to 13 percent, with full staffing targeted for August 1.
  • The company set a budget of more than €1 million for 2026 and said staff will remove people who clearly have no transport need, including some homeless riders.
  • Berlin’s transport senator Ute Bonde and the VBB endorsed the plan, and new CEO Heiko Büttner said related work with police will focus on quicker responses to track trespass.
