Berlin Police Publish Suspect Descriptions in Kreuzberg Antisemitic Assault and Seek Public Help

The state criminal protection unit says the case is being treated as ideologically motivated and has opened a public tip line to help identify the attackers.

Overview

  • Two people were set upon on a Kreuzberg sidewalk in late January, police say, when five young men beat a 40-year-old Israeli man and his 45-year-old companion, stole the woman’s shoulder bag and directed antisemitic insults at the male victim.
  • Investigators classified the incident as an antisemitic assault combined with robbery and passed the case to the Polizeilicher Staatsschutz at the Berlin state criminal police (LKA) for further inquiry.
  • In late May the police released detailed physical and clothing descriptions of three of the suspects, including approximate ages, heights and distinctive items such as a skateboard, a silver jacket and a light bomber jacket.
  • Authorities ask anyone with information to contact the LKA Staatsschutz by phone, by email at lka535@polizei.berlin.de or via any Berlin police station or the police Internetwache to help identify the assailants.
  • Police work on this case could affect local security measures and community trust, and investigators say public tips are crucial to hold the attackers accountable and clarify whether the assault was politically motivated.
