Berlin Keeps Görlitzer Park Open for May Day, Bans Treptower Park Parties

The open gates aim to keep escape routes clear during large crowds.

Overview

  • Berlin’s Senate administration, which published its decision Friday, will suspend Görlitzer Park’s nightly closure from April 30 to May 2 to avoid bottlenecks during May Day crowds.
  • A separate order by police and the Treptow‑Köpenick district bans parties and outdoor assemblies in large parts of Treptower Park from Friday, May 1, 6 a.m. to Saturday, May 2, 6 a.m. to protect the park as a listed garden monument.
  • The Treptower restriction covers areas from the Spree, including the Island of Youth, to Bulgarische Straße and the S‑Bahn line, with the Puschkinallee roadway exempt so traffic and registered marches there can proceed.
  • Multiple events are slated in Kreuzberg on May 1, including the “Free Görli – Rave against the Zaun” in the park and the Revolutionary 1 May march passing nearby, and police expect thousands after last year’s 15,000–18,000 turnout.
  • Police say planning is ongoing with reinforced units at Görlitzer Park, a response shaped by new fencing, nightly closures since March, and earlier sabotage of gates and locks that complicated security operations.
