Berlin Fells Two Jahn‑Sportpark Floodlight Masts in Controlled Blasts After Brief Delay

The controlled blasts advance plans for an inclusive sportpark featuring a 20,000-seat stadium.

Overview

  • Two eastern steel masts, each about 50 meters tall and roughly 39 tonnes, were brought down around 11:29–11:30 after a 30‑minute delay, with each fall completed within seconds.
  • A security zone covered the entire sportpark, the Max‑Schmeling‑Halle and parts of the Mauerpark, and residents were allowed to remain in their homes after prior notification.
  • Acoustic warnings were used with a long tone to clear the zone, two short tones before detonation and three short tones to signal all clear, with noise levels reported up to about 100 decibels.
  • Traffic controls and Tram M10 service were temporarily restricted during the operation and were lifted shortly after the detonations.
  • Two of the four original masts will be retained for their landmark value without reactivation, and the broader redevelopment continues with a new 20,000‑seat stadium planned after earlier asbestos findings pushed the start to the third quarter of 2026.
