Berlin Court Sentences Syrian Man to 13 Years for Holocaust Memorial Stabbing

Judges applied adult criminal law based on a finding of adult-level maturity.

Overview

  • The 20-year-old Syrian, identified as Wassim Al M., was convicted of attempted murder, grievous bodily harm and attempted membership in a terrorist organization.
  • Presiding judge Doris Husch said he acted in the name of the Islamic State group and selected the site to find people he believed were Jewish.
  • The February 2025 attack left a Spanish tourist with a 14-centimeter throat wound; he survived but remains unable to work and is receiving psychological treatment.
  • He confessed during the trial and expressed remorse, and because he was 19 at the time, the court evaluated and treated him as an adult under Germany’s 18–20 offender rules.
  • He was arrested near the memorial hours later with blood on his hands and clothes, carrying a Koran and a prayer rug, and had shouted “Allahu akbar,” according to the court.
