Overview
- The city police launched Operation Mukta on Saturday, August 8, carrying out coordinated raids and document checks across Whitefield, Electronic City and other localities.
- Electronic City teams detained 1,909 people for verification and Whitefield teams screened about 1,035 people, and police now say 105 suspected Bangladeshi nationals have been identified citywide.
- Those flagged by police have been produced before the Foreigners Regional Registration Office for legal processing and possible deportation after document verification.
- A coalition of civil liberties groups has filed complaints alleging unlawful mass detentions, physical assault, phone seizures and obstruction of legal access and they are demanding an independent probe.
- State officials say the operation will continue, that they are coordinating with central agencies including the BSF and FRRO, and that investigations will also examine landlords and networks suspected of facilitating unauthorised stays.
