Bengaluru Auto Driver, 65, Dies After E‑Scooter Blast During Overnight Charge

Police have opened an unnatural death inquiry to pin down whether the blast came from the battery, the charger, or faulty wiring.

Overview

  • The 65-year-old, identified as Lourd Nathan, died in Murphy Town after his electric two-wheeler allegedly exploded while charging inside his home early Tuesday, police said.
  • The scooter was put to charge around 11 p.m. Monday, and a blast around 3 a.m. Tuesday set the ground-floor room ablaze as he slept nearby.
  • His son and neighbors broke in, pulled him out, and took him to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
  • Halasuru police registered an Unnatural Death Report under Section 194 of the BNSS, and forensic teams and the Electrical Inspectorate are examining the scene to confirm the cause.
  • Officers noted the scooter was reportedly an Okinawa model parked a few feet from where he slept, and the blaze damaged household items, highlighting safety risks when charging vehicles indoors in small homes.
