Belfast Knife Victim Wakes From Coma but Faces Possible Total Blindness

The family's update heightens fears about community unrest with criminal charges in progress alongside a large police operation under way.

Overview

  • A man, Stephen Ogilvie, was stabbed on June 8 on Kinnaird Avenue in north Belfast, an attack that triggered two nights of violent disorder including arson, road checkpoints and damage to homes and buses.
  • On June 17 the victim's family said Ogilvie has been taken out of an induced coma but faces the possibility of losing sight in his remaining right eye after already losing vision in his left.
  • Thirty-year-old Hadi Alodid has been charged with attempted murder, possession of a knife and related offences and is due to appear again by videolink in July as the PSNI investigates the attack.
  • Police say dozens were arrested in the disorder with at least 23 people charged to date, and authorities are probing how a widely shared graphic video and online amplification helped drive street action.
  • A public fundraiser has raised more than £30,000 for Ogilvie and his family have appealed for calm while the case and wider questions about migration, border routes and policing continue to shape community tensions.
