Beehive Fire Grows to 2,236 Acres with No Containment

Rapid wind-driven growth has forced managers to escalate command, mobilize dozers and aircraft, with Stage 2 fire restrictions set to begin June 30.

Overview

  • The Beehive Fire was first reported on June 26 after a detection flight north of Highway 64 in the Tusas Valley about 15 miles west of Tres Piedras.
  • Strong southwest winds on June 27 pushed the blaze toward the Lamy Peak area and produced spot-fire driven growth that increased acreage rapidly.
  • As of the June 28 update the fire is estimated at 2,236 acres with 0% containment and about 200 personnel assigned to suppression efforts.
  • Fire managers have ordered six dozers, are using helicopters and air tankers when winds allow, and will transition command to the Northern New Mexico Type 3 Incident Management Team.
  • There are no evacuations, but heavy smoke is affecting Highway 285 and the Carson National Forest will move from Stage 1 to Stage 2 fire restrictions starting June 30 while the fire’s cause remains under investigation.
