Bee Swarm Stings Tourists at Sinhagad Fort, Entry Suspended

Officials are reviewing safety measures before deciding on reopening.

Overview

  • Forest officials and volunteers reported injuries ranging from eight to at least 25 after the swarm struck near the Tanaji Malusare samadhi around 2 to 2:30 pm.
  • A one-and-a-half-year-old boy, identified as Yuvaansh Sonar, and 67-year-old Nandkumar Gharge were among the seriously hurt but were reported out of immediate danger.
  • Eyewitnesses alleged a tourist threw a stone at a beehive, though officials noted bee agitation can also be triggered by heat, strong smells or smoke.
  • Forest and disaster-management teams evacuated the site, paused entry for the day, halted vehicle movement on the Ghat road and said the situation was under control by about 6 pm.
  • Injured visitors received initial care at the Khanapur primary health centre with transfers to nearby hospitals as local volunteers used private vehicles to move patients.
