  • CNN announced on Tuesday that it will host a one-hour debate between Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton on Sept. 30 at 9 p.m. ET.
  • The network named Dana Bash and Jake Tapper as moderators and said there will be no studio audience while the event airs across CNN, CNN International, CNN en Español and CNN.com.
  • CNN required qualifiers to meet California secretary-of-state rules, raise or loan at least $1 million for their campaigns, and register 15% support in two qualifying polls before clearing the candidates for the stage.
  • The debate comes days before counties begin mailing mail-in ballots and ahead of early voting and ballot drop-off that starts Oct. 5, giving voters a late, televised chance to compare the candidates.
  • Becerra is the Democratic front-runner with statewide name recognition and recent polling advantage, Hilton is a conservative commentator running on affordability and public-safety themes, and the winner will succeed term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom.
