Overview
- Citing a PTI interview on Thursday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said he has asked the General Manager (Games Development) to identify whether the IPL can run from about March 10 to May 15 in 2027.
- Saikia told reporters there are no immediate plans to expand the tournament beyond the current 74 matches because overseas players and bilateral international schedules limit the available window.
- To make an earlier IPL possible the BCCI would need to finish India’s domestic season by about March 10, which means compressing competitions such as the Ranji Trophy into an earlier calendar.
- The proposal responds to complaints from players and fans about extreme heat in northern and western India and to the risk that pre‑monsoon rain will disrupt playoffs and the final when reserve options are limited.
- The move is currently exploratory and will be discussed at the IPL Governing Council with no final schedule or formal domestic calendar change approved yet.
