Overview
- The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which released the names Monday, identified the man as Desaver Brian Hollis and the officers as Sgts. Mario Leon and Kristian Schultz, and said both officers are on leave during its review.
- Responding to a reported vehicle theft in Richfield on April 29, officers chased Hollis on foot, and investigators say he shot Sgt. Leon in the hand before both officers returned fire and killed him.
- Investigators recovered a handgun and spent casings at the scene, and body-worn cameras recorded parts of the encounter.
- Richfield police requested the independent investigation, and the BCA will present its findings to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for a charging decision.
- Hollis’ family gathered outside the BCA to demand the release of bodycam footage, squad video and 911 audio, and investigators say they also obtained surveillance video of the incident.
