BCA Names Cleavon White and Officer Josiah Duit in Fatal Rochester Shooting

The agency plans to forward its findings to the Olmsted County Attorney after reviewing body-camera evidence.

Overview

  • Rochester police and a crisis response social worker responded around 9:30 p.m. on March 11 to an apartment on the 1900 block of Ashland Drive Northwest for a mental-health call.
  • Officials say Cleavon White, 47, was acting erratically, was deemed a threat to himself and others, was placed on a 72-hour hold, and refused transport to the hospital.
  • According to the BCA, White resisted during a custody attempt, grabbed an officer’s gun and caused it to fire, after which Officer Josiah Duit fired multiple shots that struck White.
  • First responders performed life-saving measures, White was taken to Mayo Clinic Hospital — St. Mary, and he was later pronounced dead, while no officers were injured.
  • The BCA says body-worn cameras captured portions of the incident but have not been released, and Duit, who has three years of experience, is on critical incident leave during the ongoing investigation.
