B.C. Woman Pleads Guilty After Trying to Euthanize Cat With Fentanyl

Prosecuted under the Criminal Code, the conviction carries a five-year ban on animal ownership.

Overview

  • The conviction, reported June 10, 2026, follows Jayme-Jo Crystal Brooks’s guilty plea to administering a poisonous drug to a domestic animal.
  • The BC SPCA began investigating in December 2024 after a veterinarian reported a cat in critical distress and a necropsy confirmed fentanyl exposure.
  • Officers seized two other cats from the home and toxicology tests found cocaine, amphetamines and methamphetamine in both animals.
  • Brooks received a five-year prohibition on owning or living with animals and a 12-month probation order that requires counselling or education and 30 hours of community service.
