Overview
- B.C.’s Public Safety Ministry announced the inquest Monday, days after the IIO found no reasonable grounds to charge RCMP officers in the Feb. 9 death of Chase de Balinhard.
- A presiding coroner and a jury will hear testimony under oath in a process required in B.C. when a death occurs while a person is detained by or in the custody of a peace officer.
- The inquest is expected next year, and no date has been set.
- According to the IIO, police engaged the teen for about 22 minutes after he called 911 reporting he was suicidal and had a gun, two officers fired when he pointed what appeared to be a firearm later determined to be a replica, and he was declared dead at the scene.
- The IIO report notes the Grade 10 student had autism and ADHD, and that RCMP responded with Car 67, the police mental-health outreach unit.
