BBC to Cut Up to 2,000 Jobs and Ax Long‑Running Programmes

Matt Brittin says the measures will free funds for digital services to help meet a £500m savings target.

Overview

  • The BBC announced on Wednesday that it will reduce headcount by about 1,800–2,000 roles, with roughly 550 jobs coming from news, television and radio teams.
  • The corporation will cut around £80 million from commissioning and has confirmed the cancellation of several programmes, including Radio 4’s The World Tonight.
  • This first tranche is expected to deliver about £160 million of savings and will also affect around 700 corporate roles with voluntary redundancy windows open.
  • Leadership says resources will be redirected to the BBC app, iPlayer and platforms such as YouTube and TikTok while the broadcaster reviews its TV channel and radio network portfolio.
  • Unions warn the scale of the cuts risks weakening news capacity and public‑service output, and the changes will shape the BBC’s position ahead of the licence‑fee and charter funding review.
