BBC Restores 1996 Doctor Who TV Movie for 30th‑Anniversary 4K Release

The release treats the cult favorite as an archival project, scanning original 35mm elements with a rebuilt surround soundtrack.

Overview

  • Doctor Who: The Movie will arrive in the UK in May 2026, with pre-orders opening soon and a US date not yet confirmed.
  • The remaster will be sold as a Limited Edition Steelbook combining 4K UHD and Blu-ray, alongside standalone 4K UHD and standard Blu-ray editions.
  • Both the uncensored UK version and the original US broadcast cut are included to present the film’s alternate edits.
  • Bonus features span new cast featurettes and legacy materials, including audio commentaries, an isolated score, The Seven Year Hitch documentary, Paul McGann’s audition tape, alternate takes, an EPK, behind-the-scenes footage, a TARDIS tour, and BBC trails.
  • Originally a BBC–Universal–Fox co‑production set in San Francisco that introduced Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor, the film later became a cult bridge to expanded books and audio dramas.
