BBC Announces Cast and Begins Filming of Open Water

Author Caleb Azumah Nelson is leading the adaptation to keep the novel’s voice while the series is positioned for global release.

Overview

  • The BBC revealed the principal cast on Thursday and production is now filming in Birmingham and London for an eight-part series based on Open Water.
  • Toheeb Jimoh will play Marcus, a retail worker and aspiring photographer, and Dujonna Gift will make her lead TV debut as Effie, a dance student.
  • Caleb Azumah Nelson is the lead writer, director and an executive producer on the project, a rare example of the author maintaining creative control over a screen adaptation.
  • Mam Tor Productions and B-Side Productions are producing for BBC One and iPlayer, with Banijay Rights handling international distribution and Cassie Kinoshi attached to compose the score.
  • The adaptation highlights a tender Black British love story and a project documenting Black creatives, and it arrives with no broadcast date announced so the BBC’s release timing remains pending.
