Bay Area Climber Rescued After 700-Foot Fall on Mount Shasta

High winds forced a dawn response, prompting renewed guidance to start down by noon.

Overview

  • The pair, ages 19 and 20 from the Bay Area, called for help at 8:22 p.m. Sunday after summiting earlier in the day.
  • The fall occurred in Avalanche Gulch below Red Banks, and the injured climber suffered significant shoulder, hand and ankle injuries.
  • Night operations were halted by hazardous winds, so U.S. Forest Service climbing rangers and Siskiyou County Search and Rescue reached the pair at first light Monday.
  • The injured climber was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Mount Shasta, and authorities have not released an update on his condition.
  • Officials said this was the first major Mount Shasta rescue of 2026 and reiterated guidance to descend by noon, check conditions with rangers, and carry crampons, helmets, ice axes and emergency supplies.
