Bavaria’s 2026 Local Elections: Notifications Mailed, Postal-Vote Deadlines Set

Officials are prioritizing timely postal-vote guidance to avoid late or invalid ballots.

Overview

  • Election notifications have been posted since January 26 and should reach voters by February 15, after which anyone still without one should contact their municipal election office.
  • Postal voting can be requested via the form or online; the last regular application date is March 6, ballots should be mailed by March 5, and proof-based exceptions on election day are possible until 15:00.
  • The U18 youth vote will pilot secure online voting from February 16–27 in Augsburg, Dasing, Donauwörth, Lauf an der Pegnitz, Lappersdorf, Mellrichstadt, Pegnitz, Tutzing, Zeitlarn and Landkreis Regensburg for 14- to 17-year-old EU or German citizens.
  • About 10.05 million people are eligible to choose nearly 40,000 local mandates on March 8, with polling stations open 08:00–18:00 and council counts often taking longer due to cumulative and split-ticket options.
  • Not every municipality will elect a mayor or district administrator on March 8 because staggered terms and successor rules shift some contests, and any runoffs are scheduled for March 22.
