Bavaria Switches On Solar Canopy Pilot Over State Road Near Munich Airport

The 35-meter structure serves as a pilot to assess the feasibility of using road infrastructure for solar electricity.

Overview

  • Minister-President Markus Söder and Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter inaugurated the installation on August 26 on Staatsstraße 2584 at the Hallbergmoos junction.
  • The canopy spans 35 meters with about 1,235 square meters of photovoltaic modules and a peak capacity of roughly 210 kWp.
  • Annual generation is projected at around 210,000 kWh, enough to cover the consumption of about 70 households and avoid more than 115 tons of CO2.
  • Electricity feeds into the Stadtwerke Freising grid and directly powers emergency call pillars, traffic-counting equipment and road control systems.
  • Built since September 2024 for approximately €4.2 million, the project uses transparent glass modules to avoid a tunnel effect and will inform potential wider deployment under Bavaria’s climate program.
