Bavaria Ends State-Backed Alpinium Project With Staff Shifted to Conservation Roles

The move follows a local referendum rejecting a new center in Obermaiselstein.

Overview

  • The Bavarian cabinet decided on December 17 to discontinue the Alpinium as a state-run model initiative at the Riedberger Horn.
  • All Alpinium employees will transfer to the Government of Swabia to work within the state nature conservation administration, preserving on-the-ground expertise.
  • Balderschwang will receive €4 million over the next 20 years to support nature-friendly tourism, climate measures, alpine agriculture, and cultural landscape preservation.
  • The decision comes after voters in Obermaiselstein rejected plans for an Alpinium new-build in a citizens' referendum earlier this year.
  • Launched after the 2018 halt to the controversial Riedberger Horn ski-lift plan, the Alpinium focused on visitor management and environmental education and currently employs 14 staff.
