Bavaria Adds Dachau’s ‘Herb Garden’ to Memorial

State funding will clean up contamination to open the site for teaching against antisemitism.

Overview

  • The Bavarian cabinet approved the move Tuesday, with the state paying for pollution cleanup and first steps like a visitor path and on-site information.
  • The so‑called Herb Garden was an SS test farm where prisoners were forced to work under brutal conditions, a place many inmates feared and called the Plantation.
  • Foundation director Karl Freller said the team has pushed for years to include the site in Dachau’s education work and now has a clear path to carry it out.
  • Plans announced the same day include renovating a former administration building at Flossenbürg for about €13 million to serve as a permanent learning site.
  • The state will also prepare to bring parts of the Kaufering VII subcamp under the memorial foundation, which would secure remaining relics and create safer public access as eyewitnesses grow fewer.
