Baturité Diocese Installed as First in Brazil Created by Pope Leão XIV

Church leaders say the new structure will bring pastoral care closer to communities in the Maciço de Baturité.

Overview

  • The Diocese of Baturité, officially installed Wednesday, became the first Brazilian diocese created under Pope Leão XIV.
  • Dom Luís Gonzaga Silva Pepeu took possession as the first bishop and keeps his personal rank as archbishop, which the Church styles as arcebispo-bispo.
  • A large public ceremony drew more than 40 bishops, hundreds of priests and seminarians, and Cardinal Sérgio da Rocha represented the Pope.
  • The new circumscription was carved from the Archdiocese of Fortaleza and now covers 14 municipalities and 21 parishes with about 298,221 residents.
  • Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora da Palma in Baturité is now the cathedral, and the territory includes the major pilgrimage site of São Francisco das Chagas in Canindé.
