Overview
- The Diocese of Baturité, officially installed Wednesday, became the first Brazilian diocese created under Pope Leão XIV.
- Dom Luís Gonzaga Silva Pepeu took possession as the first bishop and keeps his personal rank as archbishop, which the Church styles as arcebispo-bispo.
- A large public ceremony drew more than 40 bishops, hundreds of priests and seminarians, and Cardinal Sérgio da Rocha represented the Pope.
- The new circumscription was carved from the Archdiocese of Fortaleza and now covers 14 municipalities and 21 parishes with about 298,221 residents.
- Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora da Palma in Baturité is now the cathedral, and the territory includes the major pilgrimage site of São Francisco das Chagas in Canindé.
