Bathinda Man Arrested in Killing of Woman Found in Suitcase

Investigators used CCTV and phone data to identify the suspect and say the motive is still being established.

Overview

  • Police identified the victim as Sapna, also known as Malika, a native of Baghapurana in Moga district who had been living in Bathinda.
  • According to police, Prince Kumar allegedly stabbed her at his Surkhpeer residence on February 9, kept the body for two days, attempted to burn it, and later dumped it in a suitcase near Behman Diwana on the night of February 10–11.
  • CCTV footage last showed Sapna with Kumar on February 7 in Parasram Nagar, and phone-record analysis that led officers to question 15 people helped them zero in on him.
  • Officials said they recovered the suitcase, the knife believed to have been used, and a silver Hyundai i20 car allegedly used to transport the body.
  • The SSP described the case as a potential crime of passion and said Kumar lived alone with no prior criminal record; police added he got a chest tattoo featuring images of himself with the victim after the killing and will be produced in court for remand.
