Basque Coast Starts Summer OTA Paid Parking as Beaches Fill Early

Local governments are expanding paid, timed parking to curb congestion and raise turnover as visitor numbers rise.

Overview

  • Unseasonably warm weather in late May filled Gipuzkoa beaches, increasing demand for parking just before the high season.
  • Municipalities across Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia confirmed that regulated paid parking will begin on Monday, June 1 for many main coastal towns, with the season running through September 30 in much of Bizkaia.
  • Some towns will use later start dates: Zumaia, Deba and Mutriku plan mid-June activation and Bakio has scheduled its season to begin on June 20.
  • Summer rules raise hourly tariffs and extend enforcement hours compared with the rest of the year, making parking near popular beaches noticeably more expensive.
  • Authorities are directing drivers to peripheral lots to ease town-centre congestion, with Zarautz recommending the Hegoalde and Asti car parks as primary alternatives to entering the centre.
