Base Launches MCP to Let ChatGPT and Claude Prepare On-Chain Wallet Actions

Built on OAuth 2.1 with stored-request flows, the gateway keeps private keys on users' devices.

Overview

  • Base announced Base MCP, which launched on Tuesday, May 26, as a Model Context Protocol gateway that lets AI clients such as ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor prepare transfers, swaps, balance checks and other on-chain actions for users’ Base Accounts.
  • The system is non-custodial: Base’s MCP server stores unsigned, pending requests that users retrieve and sign through the Base Account interface so private keys never leave the user’s device.
  • At launch Base MCP includes 'skill plugins' from Uniswap, Morpho, Moonwell, Avantis, Aerodrome, Bankr and Virtuals that let agents build workflows for swaps, lending, liquidity and perpetuals without bespoke integrations.
  • The product extends Coinbase’s x402 agentic payment work to enable small agent-driven crypto payments, but x402 volume is still tiny with about $1.1 million cleared in the last 30 days, underscoring that agentic commerce remains experimental.
  • Researchers and security firms warn the agent model creates new attack surfaces such as prompt injection and malware targeting developer tools so independent scrutiny and careful user review of proposed transactions will be key as adoption grows.
