Barcelona’s MNAC Unveils €112.7 Million Expansion to Open in 2029

The plan makes the Palau Victòria Eugènia the main entrance, linking it to the Palau Nacional to permanently show more Catalan art.

Overview

  • MNAC publicly presented the winning HArquitectes and Christ & Gantenbein design after legal appeals were dismissed, confirming the project’s path forward.
  • The scheme rehabilitates the Palau Victòria Eugènia as the gateway and connects it to the Palau Nacional via a fully accessible covered passage with an underground tunnel for operations.
  • The expansion raises public program space from 21,036 m² to 33,833 m² and exhibition space from 10,941 m² to 19,425 m², bringing total area to 71,417 m².
  • The €112.67 million budget will be financed 50% by the Generalitat, 30% by Spain’s Ministry of Culture, and 20% by the Barcelona City Council.
  • Construction is slated to start in early 2028 with a first lot targeted for completion in Q1 2029, and MNAC warns of possible partial or full closures during 2027–2029.
