Barcelona Opens CaixaResearch Institute, First Dedicated Immunology Center in Southern Europe

The foundation-backed hub uses immunology as a shared playbook to move lab insights faster to patients.

Overview

  • The CaixaResearch Institute opened in Barcelona on Friday in a ceremony led by King Felipe VI with national and regional leaders in attendance.
  • Fundación la Caixa invested €100 million to build the campus and set a €10 million launch-year budget funded in full by the foundation.
  • The center studies the immune system across cancer, infections and brain disorders to turn lab findings into tests and treatments through close ties to top hospitals.
  • Four research groups are already active in the first building, with plans to add roughly four teams per year toward about 40 groups and up to 500 staff within six to eight years.
  • Early hires include senior scientists Gabriel Rabinovich and Josep Dalmau, with María Mittelbrunn due to start in autumn 2026 alongside junior group leaders Gemma Moncunill, Héctor Huerga-Encabo and María Martínez.
