Barcelona Braces for Tour de France Grand Départ as Major Barriers and Security Operation Go Live

A reinforced metro service, a 4,500‑officer security operation and nearly 37,000 temporary barriers have been deployed to manage very large crowds and planned demonstrations.

Overview

  • As of 1 July, crews have installed about 20,000 of roughly 37,000 safety barriers and opened Palau Sant Jordi for the Tour caravan as teams and equipment continue to arrive.
  • Organisers and the Ajuntament published detailed mobility plans that reroute or suspend dozens of bus lines, advise avoiding private cars, and direct riders to an expanded metro service that TMB plans to boost by about 30–40 percent.
  • A 4,500‑officer security deployment is in place to control crowd flow, operate pedestrian bridges and staff checkpointed circuit perimeters for the team time trial on 4 July and the Montjuïc finish on 5 July.
  • The public team presentation remains scheduled for 2 July from Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau along Avinguda Gaudí to the Sagrada Família with free citywide cultural programming running through 5 July to absorb spectators.
  • Political groups have called visible mobilisations during the race days, and authorities warn that the combination of huge spectator numbers, hotel pressure and tight street closures will add strain to local transport and neighbourhood access.
