Barapullah Phase-3 Flyover Nears Completion as Delhi PWD Seeks Inauguration Date

A 3.5 km signal-free link is set to cut Mayur Vihar–AIIMS peak travel to about 15–20 minutes.

Overview

  • The Delhi Public Works Department has written to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta asking her to finalise a date for the flyover’s inauguration, which officials say is expected this month.
  • The elevated corridor is 3.5 km long and will provide a completely signal-free route through Mayur Vihar, Sarai Kale Khan and Barapullah to AIIMS, shortening rush-hour journeys from roughly 30–40 minutes to about 15–20 minutes.
  • Work on the project began in 2015 after a 2014 approval and missed its original 2017 deadline because of land acquisition fights, contractor disputes, environmental clearances for work on the Yamuna floodplain, and the construction of a cable-stayed bridge.
  • The cost has risen from an initial estimate of ₹964 crore to about ₹1,330 crore and late-stage progress was slowed by disruptions to supplies such as bitumen and industrial gas and by worker shortages during recent elections.
  • Officials expect the opening to be a high-profile event with the Chief Minister and Union ministers and say the ceremony may be paired with the nearby Mukarba Chowk underpass; commuters can expect faster, more reliable connections from East Delhi and neighbouring cities once the corridor is operational.
