Bangkok Pub Fire Kills at Least 27

Investigators have opened a formal probe after a musician reported smoke from a circuit breaker followed by an explosion near the stage.

Overview

  • The fire tore through the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao pub in Bangkok’s Chatuchak/Lat Phrao area, and the blaze that broke out around midnight on Sunday left at least 27 people dead and dozens injured.
  • Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said a musician on stage saw smoke from a circuit breaker before a power outage and an explosion, and authorities are treating that account as central to the investigation.
  • Firefighters from Phaholyothin, Phaya Thai and Huai Khwang stations brought the blaze under control in about 30–35 minutes while search-and-rescue teams continued to check the scene for survivors.
  • Rescuers found many victims concentrated in the pub’s restrooms after patrons reportedly fled there to escape smoke, and dozens of injured people were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
  • The incident renews scrutiny of nightlife safety in Thailand after past deadly venue fires and could prompt inspections and tighter enforcement of wiring, exit access and crowd controls at entertainment venues.
