Overview
- Baltimore prosecutors announced Thursday that Dontaye Montez Carter, 44, faces first-degree murder, conspiracy, kidnapping and firearm charges in the 2022 death of Kenneth Lawson.
- Lawson, 20, was found shot in the back of the head on the Route 295 Westport exit ramp on Jan. 22, 2022, in what investigators say was a retaliatory killing.
- Prosecutors say Carter was carjacked the day before the killing and that surveillance video showed Lawson lowering his mask during the robbery, which investigators used to identify him.
- Officials say Carter tracked a stolen phone with the Find My iPhone app and shared social-media screenshots and an address with associates before Lawson was lured or taken to Westport and killed.
- Baltimore’s Cold Case Unit helped bring the case forward after its creation two years ago, Carter was arrested in April, the investigation remains open and an alleged associate has not been publicly named.
