Overview
- In late June James Ohlen, co‑lead designer of Baldur’s Gate 2, said Hasbro CEO Chris Cox asked him to head Baldur’s Gate 4 and he declined because he believed he would fail.
- Ohlen told reporters he did not want to try to match Baldur’s Gate 3’s standards and that rebuilding Larian’s proprietary engine and development tools would be “at least half a decade of horror.”
- Larian Studios earlier chose not to lead a numbered sequel and stopped its own BG4 work to return to its own projects, leaving the franchise owner to seek a new development partner.
- Ohlen has since left Archetype Entertainment and game development citing burnout, and no other studio has publicly committed to developing Baldur’s Gate 4.
- While the sequel’s stewardship is unresolved, multiple reports say Wizards of the Coast is moving ahead with remasters of the older Baldur’s Gate titles with Kevin Martens linked to those projects, which could shape the franchise’s near term path.
