Bail Granted to Three Held in Kolkata Gita Recital Vendor Assault Case

Investigators are still reviewing footage after a counter-complaint alleged a vendor misrepresented chicken patties as vegetarian.

Overview

  • Two hawkers, Sheikh Riyazul and Md Salauddin, filed FIRs alleging they were beaten, forced to do sit-ups and had patties worth about ₹3,000 destroyed near the Dec 7 mass Gita recital at Brigade Parade Ground.
  • Kolkata Police arrested Soumik Golder, Swarnendu Chakraborty and Tarun Bhattacharya after identifying them from viral video and CCTV footage.
  • The accused were booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita provisions for causing hurt, mischief, unlawful assembly and deliberate acts intended to outrage religious feelings.
  • A city court on Thursday rejected a police remand plea and granted bail to the three on personal bonds of ₹1,000 each.
  • Event organisers denied ordering any ban on non-vegetarian food, as TMC and CPI(M) accused BJP-linked groups of 'food policing' and BJP leaders denied organisational involvement.
