Baby Shark Boy to Release Single 'WAVE' on Aug. 20

Pinkfong is testing whether its viral children's franchise can move into mainstream pop with a single rollout followed by a planned documentary.

Overview

  • Pinkfong announced on Monday that Park Geon-roung, the child from the 2016 Baby Shark Dance video now billed as Baby Shark Boy, will release his first digital single, WAVE, scheduled for Aug. 20.
  • The single is credited as a Korean-language track co-written by Park and features Joohoney of Monsta X as a guest artist.
  • A 17-second teaser posted to Pinkfong and Baby Shark Boy channels includes a brief vocal from Park and an interpolation of the original “Baby Shark” hook over synth-pop production.
  • Pinkfong says this is an experimental, one-off artist project and that decisions about future activity will depend on the single’s reception, with a behind-the-scenes film, WAVE: A Boy’s Record, planned after the release.
  • The rollout uses nostalgia and the franchise’s reach—Pinkfong’s 2016 video has more than 17 billion views—to measure demand for human-centered extensions of the Baby Shark brand and to test whether that interest can be monetized in music and documentary formats.
