Overview
- The police and council held a small graveside service at Bishop Auckland Town Cemetery on Monday, April 27, to bury the child known as Baby Auckland.
- Contractors found the skeleton under floorboards at a Fore Bondgate flat on July 29, 2024, wrapped in a newspaper from June 1910 with twine around the neck.
- Forensic tests showed the baby was a full-term boy, and radiocarbon dating placed the remains before the mid-20th century with some results pointing to 1726–1812.
- A post-mortem at the Royal Victoria Infirmary could not determine how the child died, so the coroner recorded the death as unascertained.
- An inquest remains open with a full hearing set for May 18 in Crook, and police say DNA checks found no family matches or further reasonable lines of inquiry.
