- On Tuesday June 30, 2026 Alberto González Amador told the investigating judge that he received a photograph of two El País journalists from a neighbor, forwarded that image to Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, identified the neighbor, and handed additional photos to the court.
- The court is examining whether Rodríguez committed the crime of revelation of secrets by circulating on March 19, 2024 the journalists’ photo together with their full names and an allegation they had been harassing neighbors.
- Rodríguez had previously told the judge in May that he recognized the journalists because González Amador had sent him the image after a ‘‘neighbor angry’’ passed it on, and Rodríguez’s defense says the new testimony supports his innocence.
- Judicial records note that a plainclothes police officer questioned the two reporters on March 19 while they were investigating the president’s residence, and the judge has so far rejected some requests for further probes such as a phone search of Rodríguez.
- The case raises wider political and press freedom stakes because González Amador faces separate probes for alleged tax fraud and business corruption and any finding of unlawful disclosure could increase scrutiny of President Isabel Díaz Ayuso’s inner circle.
