Axel Springer to Buy Telegraph Media Group for £575 Million

The Berlin-based publisher now turns to UK approval following DMGT’s stalled bid under public-interest scrutiny.

Overview

  • Axel Springer reached an all-cash agreement with current owner RedBird IMI to acquire the Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph and Telegraph.co.uk for £575 million.
  • The deal replaces a prior arrangement with Daily Mail owner DMGT and concludes a protracted sale that began after Lloyds seized the titles from the Barclay family in 2023.
  • Axel Springer and RedBird IMI said they will engage the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and other regulators, adding they believe the transaction complies with the UK Foreign State Influence regime.
  • Chief executive Mathias Döpfner pledged to preserve the Telegraph’s editorial independence and invest in growth, including AI-driven digital transformation and expansion in the US.
  • Press Gazette reported the Axel Springer route is seen as facing fewer UK plurality concerns than a DMGT takeover given Springer’s smaller existing footprint.
